Online Cheating

Posted by mathfail on January 21, 2010

She goes by the name Jogann and for a price will do all of your homework!

But she’s not the only one. Dozens of so called “tutors” are available
for hire on the site JustAnswer.com. This site is supposed to be a tool
where you can ask a question, set a price, and then get an expert answer. However, it’s
commonly being abused by students who are looking to hire someone to do
their homework. At the bottom of this post is a screenshot of cheating in action.

Basically what happens is you upload your homework to a file sharing site (mediashare in this case), post your price, and then the tutor downloads it and completes the homework for you. Then the tutor will upload the complete homework to mediafire and post the link. Then after the student gets the answers, the link in the post is deleted so that no one else has access to the answers.

This is the perfect way to cheat, since, if your professor wanted to search for proof on the internet that you plagiarized, there is no way she/he will find your answers as it’s protected behind a LOCKED thread. Furthermore, if the professor found the thread and even paid the $3 to view the locked answer, then she/he still won’t find the answers you handed in, since the tutor already deleted the link to the answers.

Cheating is not fair to anyone but unfortunately is way too common (and pisses me off way too much – if I ever meet this Jogann, she’s getting a punch in the face).

** Note: Some posts on Math-Fail are user-submitted and NOT verified by the admin of the site before publication. If you find this post to be distasteful, non-math related. or something worse. then definitely leave a comment letting me know. Thanks very much! Mike **

I do trust all of the ideas you’ve offered for your post. They are very convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are very short for novices. May you please lengthen them a little from next time? Thanks for the post.

Should people be asking homework questions? Should people be ANSWERING homework questions?

In my opinion, this comes down to a short-term vs long-term impact view.

Socratic is not about one student's homework, or about how we could or could not be helping that student cheat on his assignment.

Our goal here is to teach and make learning easier by building a long-time resource available to students from all over the world. And solving homework-style questions helps us get closer to that goal.

Now, not all people who ask homework questions online are lazy. In my view, posting a question online and copying the answer someone else provided is not laziness, it's misplaced effort.

If we manage to answer questions in such a way that would help students who are looking to learn, then we've got the long-term part covered.

If we manage to answer questions in such a way that would make copying the text beneficial even to those students who are looking to copy it for their assignments, then we've got the short-term part covered.

The part about concepts being hard to understand - that's as relative of a concept as you'll ever see in education. Hard for whom? Hard from the teacher's point of view, or hard from the student's?

We have no way of knowing who these students are, or what their classroom teachers are doing to help them understand things. Will some of them be looking to cheat? Of course, it would be naive not to acknowledge that! But I think it's safe to say that not all of them fit that description.

Now, to your point about students looking at other solved questions for help - many are doing just that!

Our community has helped upwards of 8 million students - and counting! The ratio between questions asked and answers viewed confirms that we're helping students learn much more than we are helping them cheat. This is what the long-term part is all about.

The benefit of posting an answer that tackles concepts and walks the student through to the solution far outweighs the discomfort of knowing that some kid just copied your answer to avoid having to work on a math problem on a Friday night.

So, to wrap this up, it all comes down to your personal view. If you want to do something like

#2x = 2 implies x = ?#

you are free to do just that. But as far as the long-term goal is concerned, there's no tangible difference (in my mind) between that and this

#2x = 2 implies x = 1#

Should people be asking homework-style questions? Yes. Should people be answering homework-style questions? Yes.

Should people be asking homework-style questions? Yes. Should people be answering homework-style questions? Yes.

Explanation:

I found this site because I needed an example of a math problem I was trying to work out and couldn't (studying on my own with no teacher). The example I found wasn't exactly the same as the problem I was working, but taught me how to do mine. I have since answered questions on here myself and have no problem with doing so, if there is a specific answer.

Here's where I have a problem. When someone asks a question that is clearly a question on his or her homework in something like Literature or Social Studies. If you answer it, they will probably copy it down and learn nothing.

I understand that if someone is determined to cheat, they are going to find a way. I also understand that some students (and others) enjoy coming here and answering these questions and are learning themselves through that exercise.

One thing I think is worth noting, however. Socrates, whom the site is named for, is not remembered for the answers he gave, but the questions he asked that made people think. One suggestion I have, is that those of us who answer questions that clearly look like someone wants us to do their homework, might answer with a thought-provoking question instead.
