Between 1860 and 1877 there were many changes both socially and in legislation which represented a revolution of sorts due to the fact that the changing ideas and attitudes of people reached Congress and caused alterations to be made in the Constitution, the very foundation of this country.

* The Civil Rights Act of 1866 redefined what it was to be a black in America. * The legislative changes allowed blacks to move from being the underlings in a country based on servitude, to at least on paper having some of the same opportunities as whites. * The federal government did not previously think it was their place to grant black suffrage.

* Blacks in post-Civil War America felt that the union owed them and they began to expect to be treated differently and protected by the union which they had served so well. * White southerners for the most part only felt more aggression and animosity than ever toward the blacks, which were no longer their possessions.

* The blacks being more demanding, and the whites being more upset led to many violent conflicts between the two races.

This was most definitely a revolutionary time period for the United States. The blacks were now free and expected to receive the rights and privileges which came with the title Unites States Citizen. However, there was the constant cloud of racism over them due to the increased animosity directed toward the blacks from the white southerners. Certain legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1866 helped somewhat, but the discrimination and tension was still there. Altogether, the changes to the Constitution and the changes in people's attitudes made this a time period which can certainly be considered revolutionary as it altered the course of American history and helped keep alive the legacy of slavery.

The AmericanRevolution fundamentally changed American society politically, socially, and economically from 1775 to 1800. The effects of the Revolution were both positive and negative. The political effect of the Revolution was negative in that it left much conflict between different groups of people still living in the United States after the British formally left. Economically, the war brought many the colonists many monetary hardships, having lost the British as a trading partner. Socially, the movements for equality brought up questions about slavery and women and whether they deserved the same. Political questions Economically, the colonies, though ready to fight, found themselves short on money to finance the war. In 1764, the Currency act had forced all colonies to trade in gold and silver, and eventually caused a shortage of hard money. When it came time for the war, the government had no choice but start making paper money. The paper money only caused inflation as a result the American government had no choice but to borrow from other countries. This led to a substantial debt abroad and at home. The states paid off their debts by increasing taxes, but many people such as poor farmers couldn’t afford to pay. The British had complete control over almost everything but during the time period of 1750-1776, the colonists decided to show a sense of unity by working together as one to solve their nation’s problems and seeking their identity to gain their independence today. The American Revolution began directly following the French and Indian war. The Americans began to reject the British monarchy and aristocracy. in attempt to free themselves from British rule, The 13 colonies rebelled/ fought against the British and were victorious. In 1776, the Americans declared independence from Britain, created the Articles of Confederation (which turned out to be a complete failure) and created the constitution later on in 1787. The people of the United States of America began to re-think politics, their economy, and society. The Americans from the 13 colonies thought that the government that Britain ran was evil and corrupted; therefore, Americans wanted their government to be nothing like/of Britain's. Women, slaves, and loyalists experience a drastic change in society as women were given more rights, some slaves were freed (until the emancipation proclamation in 1865), and the British left America and went back to Britain. Politically, new ideas about democracy and the rights of citizens were made, and tested as well. The American Revolution completely changed every aspect of society in the Americas.

Following their breakaway from Britain, America did not want to have any resemblance of Britain. They adopted the articles of confederation that was completely uneffective and gave an extremely weak central government; which, in 1787 resulted in the making of the constitution. The United States had no source of income, was plunging into debt due to war costs, and there was no executive branch to make laws for the 13 colonies.

Rights for men began to change when the declaration of independence was written. All men were given unalienable rights along with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (Doc 1). The Declaration of Independence ensured that all citizens of the United States received these rights without them being taken away in any scenario. This represents a change in the past society as some people had more rights than others (especially people with different social statuses), now (1770's), everybody had the same rights as well as the rights being equal.

The United States of America expanded their land during the American Revolution. The Northwest ordinance of 1787 stated that it was unjust to rip land out of the hands of the Indians when it was theirs in the first place. It's stated that land would only be taken from the Indians if they gave consent (Doc 2). The United States violated the Northwest Ordinance and wound up destroying Indian "nations". The United States were called the town destroyers, as well as (basically) being called hypocrites for taking the land/ "Country" of the Indians when they made the agreement to not take their land without their prior knowledge of said action taking place (Doc 3).

One of the more negative social effects the American Revolution brought was the relationship of the Americans with the Indians. It is evident in the difference between what they had to say at the end of the war and what they had to say three years later. In the Chickasaw Chiefs’ message to Congress at the end of the war that they had high hopes for repairing their relationship, despite the assistance they had given the British (Doc. C). However, three years later, it is obvious that the Americans had no intention of reconciliation. In a speech at the Confederate council, one Indian said “It is now more than three years since peace was made between the King of Great Britain and you, but we, the Indians, were disappointed, finding ourselves not included in that peace?” (Doc. E) From this time on, the relationship between the Indians and the Americans spun out of control, eventually resulting in the decrease in Indian population and loss of their native land.

Economically, the war had very few positive effects. The debt caused by the war was immense and caused a devastating depression for the few years. The government attempted to solve this problem on their own, but it took a while for them to succeed. In Abigail Adams’ letter to Thomas Jefferson, the tension caused by the debt is very evident. She talks of communities turning on the courts and the government and of the wants and needs of those affected (Doc. G). Events such as Shay’s rebellion also show the discontent of citizens during these times. Eventually, America began promoting agriculture and turning back to a more agricultural society (Doc. F). This is when America’s economic situation really began to improve. They became more independent, and being less dependent on other countries helped bring them back together after the loss in unification during the difficult time of the events such as Shay’s Rebellion.

The greatest effects of the American Revolution lie in the political changes of American society between 1775 and 1800. The changes brought about during these times laid the foundation for the strong government of today. Although their first attempt at a Constitution did not succeed, the Articles of Confederation was a very important document in American history. It was ratified in 1781 and lasted until 1789. It had a weak central government and faced problems such as Shay’s Rebellion, the Newburgh Conspiracy, a large amount of debt, and other problems with farmers, merchants, artisans, and manufacturers. There were four main reasons the central government faced these problems:

1. They could not tax or make states give them money.

2. They could not control commerce between states.

3. Not only could the nation coin money, the states could coin money as well.

4. They could not make people fight in the military.

At the Annapolis Convention, Hamilton and Madison, along with others, realized that changes needed to be made to the Articles of Confederation and made plans to meet later in Philadelphia with representatives from each state. It was there that the Constitution was written after many long months of consideration and compromising. On December 7, 1787 Delaware unanimously voted to ratify, with most states following shortly after. It was ratified early in 1788. Although many amendments have been added to the Constitution since then, it is still the core of our government today.

The American Revolution was not only the end of an era but the beginning of a nation. The way the society developed economically, the social changes that began, and the political foundations that resulted from the American Revolution drastically affected society today in all three of those areas.
